Dragon fruit (also known as Pitahaya) is a plant native to Mexico, Central American countries and South America. Currently, this species is also grown in countries in Southeast Asia such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia (especially in western Java island); southern China, Taiwan and some other areas. Its name derives from the leather-like skin and scaly spikes on the fruit exterior.
In Vietnam, thanks to the great drought tolerance, this tree is grown mainly in the hot areas, concentratedly on a commercial scale with an area of about 2000 ha, of which Binh Thuan Province occupies 1,000 ha. Three common types of dragon fruit are white flesh dragon fruit with yellow skin, white flesh dragon fruit with red skin and red flesh dragon fruit. From April to November is the dragon fruit harvest season, and the peak period is from June to August, at which time the dragon fruit will reach the sweetest ripeness with the lowest price.
As a fruit rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals necessary for the human body, dragon fruit can help provide nutrients for your body, promote health and bring you a healthy life. Including this fruit in your diet is good for health as it is packed with nutrition while being low in calories. You can choose between fresh and frozen dragon fruit or a combination of both, which largely depends on availability. If you do not consume fresh produce quickly after buying, frozen can be a good option.
