Jackfruit Usage – Why not?

Jackfruit is a unique tropical fruit that has increased in popularity in recent years, grown mainly in Asia, Africa and South America. It belongs to the Moraceae plant family, the same as figs, mulberries and breadfruit. Under its thick, bumpy green rind is a stringy yellow flesh that you can eat raw or cooked in a variety of dishes, even its seeds are also edible. Many people said that its taste is similar to a combination of many fruits, including apples, pineapples, mangoes and bananas.

Like many fruits, jackfruit is packed with nutrients. It contains some fiber for healthy digestion and very little fat. A 100-gram portion of jackfruit has only 95 calories, 2 grams of protein, 0.6 grams of fat and 3 grams of fiber. With its abundant vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, it is believed that jackfruits have many health benefits. Eating jackfruit can potentially reduce the risk of heart disease thanks to the combination of  potassium, fiber and antioxidants contained in it. Jackfruit is high in vitamin C, which helps prevent inflammation. Moreover, jackfruit provides some proteins, which may help prevent blood sugar levels from rising too quickly after a meal.

In Vietnam, jackfruit is grown mostly in the countryside of provinces such as Lam Dong, Binh Duong and Dong Nai and concentrated on the Mekong Delta regions and the Central Highlands, including Dak Lak. Currently, this province has more than 2,081 hectares of jackfruit, an increase of 362 hectares compared to 2019, mainly intercropped in coffee gardens. In native conditions, it bears fruits year-round but peak harvest season is end summer, from June to August. And so, for those who want to taste the sweet, aromatic flavor of this summer fruit, or use it in making syrups, pastries, cakes, or ice creams, this is the best time not to be missed!
